Posterior Third of the Tongue

Mucous glands (A) lie between the lamina propria (B) and the underlying musculature of the posterior 1/3 of the dorsum of the tongue. The number of skeletal muscle cells entering the lamina propria is markedly reduced from that seen in the anterior 2/3 of the tongue. The epithelium (C) covering the dorsum of the posterior 1/3 of the tongue is not as firmly attached as is that of the anterior 2/3s. The epithelium is classified as non-keratinized stratified squamous.
