Requirements & Grading

Tardiness & Attendance

Tardiness is very disruptive, especially in a class this size.  We will use theatre seating rules.  Each class is organized around 5 distinct segments (quiz, exercise, lecture, writing practice, preview & homework).  I will close the door before I start the quiz, which is the first segment.  DO NOT ENTER THE ROOM IF THE DOOR IS CLOSED.  I will open the door after each segment; you may enter then.

As for attendance, please consider your education your “real” job.  If you wouldn’t miss work, don’t miss class.  Exercises will be done in class.  If you are not present at the time the exercise is done (e.g., if you’re late), you will not receive points.

Assignments and exams missed because of unexcused absences cannot be made up.

The following is from the campus Ombud:

Excused Absences: S.R. 5.2.4.2 defines the following as acceptable reasons for excused absences:

            1) serious illness;

            2) illness or death of family member;

            3) University-related trips;

            4) major religious holidays;

           5) other circumstances [the instructor] find[s] to be "reasonable cause for nonattendance."

Students anticipating an absence for a major religious holiday are responsible for notifying the instructor in writing of anticipated absences due to their observance of such holidays no later than the last day for adding a class. Information regarding dates of major religious holidays may be obtained through the religious liaison, Mr. Jake Karnes (257-2754).

Make-up opportunity: When there is an excused absence, students must be given the opportunity to make up missed work and/or exams. It is the student's responsibility to inform the instructor of the absence preferably in advance, but no later than one week after it.

My policies for excused absences are as follows:

(1)     You must provide me reasonable documentation.

(2)     If you miss homework and in-class assignments, I’ll simply excuse these, unless you wish to do the work, in which case, you have one week to arrange to make up the missed work.

(3)     If you miss the hourly exam because of an unexcused absence, I’ll record the grade for Part I of the comprehensive final exam.

(4)     If you have excused absences in excess of 1/5 of the course meetings and you don’t feel confident about the course material, you should ask the dean of your college for a “W” or withdrawal grade.   You can always take this course another semester.
