Water Use

Breckinridge County had an estimated population of 17,578 (7,276 households) in 1999; projected population is 19,636 (8,662 households) in 2020. Public water is provided to 3,900 customers, or about 50 percent of the county. Even if proposed projects are completed, a significant portion of the county will not be served, because these areas could not be served cost-effectively in the foreseeable future. In areas not served by public water, about half the households use wells and half use other sources. About 440 customers will be added to public water service through new line extensions from 2000 to 2020. If all proposed water line extensions are made, about 45 percent of the county will still rely on private water supplies in the year 2020.

The Water Resource Development Commission has prepared a report on water-supply infrastructure in Breckinridge County.
