Magoffin County had an estimated population of 13,853 (5,074 households) in 1999. Some 3,220 households (approximately 65 percent) were served by public water. The remainder relied primarily on wells. The population of Magoffin County is projected to be 15,200 (6,222 households) in the year 2020. Proposed water-line extensions from 2000 to 2020 will serve another 940 households. If all the proposed water-line extensions are made, about 20 percent of the county will still rely on wells in the year 2020. The Water Resource Development Commission has prepared a report on water-supply infrastructure in Magoffin County. It is estimated that there are over 200,000 water wells in Kentucky.
