WHAT KENTUCKY OFFERS

OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY WITH SOME OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY

With its Fellows and Scholars Programs, Kentucky attracts some of the top high school debaters in the country. These outstanding debaters are dispersed among all of the labs. Thus, all debaters attending Kentucky have an opportunity to work with some of the nation's best. The Fellows and Scholars are "NOT" isolated in their own separate labs.

THE KENTUCKY TRADITION

The Kentucky Institute is one of the oldest in the country having run continuously since 1961. Alumni of the Kentucky Institute, at one time or another, have won every major invitational tournament as well as the national Tournament of Champions and the Forensic League National Tournament. During the current debate season alone, Kentucky Alumni have won or been in the finals of most major invitational tournaments.

EXPERIENCED FACULTY

Kentucky Institute students study with some of the nation's most accomplished faculty. The Kentucky faculty is comprised of nationally acclaimed high school and college debaters. Faculty members at Kentucky are selected because of their ability and commitment in teaching the vital critical thinking research and communication skills necessary for being an effective debate competitor.

MORE FOR THE MONEY

Debaters attending Kentucky's three-week camp get 22 full days of instruction and practice for much less money than many institutes charge. Kentucky starts on a Saturday and ends on a Saturday. Most camps offer only 17 days.

“POLICY” & “PUBLIC FORUM” ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

APPLICATION DEADLINE

“Policy” and “Public Forum” applications are due no later Monday, June 2, 2008.  The application must be accompanied by a $100 deposit.  We limit our enrollment to sixty (60).  The remainder of the cost of tuition and housing/meals for “Policy” and “Public Forum” is due “June 13th.”  Please make checks payable to “Kentucky Debate Institute.”  If positions are still available, applications will be accepted after May 31st.  A full refund of the tuition fee will be made if the request is postmarked on or before June 2, 2008.  After that date, no refunds will be made.  Please print or type legibly your e-mail address on the application.  If we cannot read it, we will be unable to communicate with you by e-mail.  Please address all applications to “J. W. Patterson, Director of Debate, University of Kentucky, 225 Funkhouser Building, Lexington, Kentucky, 40506-0054.”

GRADE ELIGIBILITY FOR INSTITUTE

Institute participants must be in high school grades nine through twelve during the 2008-2009 school year. Exceptions may be granted by the Director.

SCHOLARSHIPS

We have a limited number of partial scholarships which will be awarded to students with exceptional ability but who cannot attend without financial assistance.  Students applying for financial aid should have applications in by Thursday, May 1st, 2008, with a $200 deposit.  WE CANNOT CONSIDER YOUR REQUEST UNLESS IT IS ACCOMPANIED BY A $200 DEPOSIT.  Please make checks payable to “Kentucky Debate Institute.”  If you are denied a scholarship and do not choose to attend the Institute, your $200 will be refunded if a refund is requested by June 2nd.

LODGING

All student dorms are double occupancy and students are responsible for BRINGING THEIR OWN LINENS (sheets, blankets, pillows, pillowcases, towels, etc.).  The beds are extra long twin size (36x80). You are also encouraged to bring a small reading lamp.  The Institute will attempt to honor mutual roommate requests. The dorms are fully equipped with air conditioning, vending machines, and laundry facilities.  Each floor has a lounge and shower facilities. Students are carefully supervised by a designated Institute dormitory staff and by their daytime instructors.  Roll-calls, room-checks, and lights-out are part of our regular monitoring procedures.  Students may not leave the campus during the Institute except for designated restaurants and stores adjacent to campus and with Institute staff for official Institute events.  As an official UK program, the Institute has close ties to the UK Police and the University of Kentucky Hospital system, should students need medical treatment.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Nightly building check-in, room check-in, and morning assemblies with roll call are part of a daily routine.  Students will not be permitted to leave the campus except to designated stores and fast food restaurants adjacent to the campus, unless escorted by their parents or by the Institute Staff for Institute sponsored functions.

COSTS NOT INCLUDED IN TUITION AND FOOD

POLICY ONLY:    The tuition and housing/meals charges do not include major lab photocopying expenses, optional policy Fellows evidence, transportation to and from the airport, and a few recreational activities.  Lab photocopying fees will be $75 and the optional policy  Fellows evidence will be $50.  Most policy students secure financial help from their high school and/or high school debate team colleagues to cover the $50 for policy Fellows evidence. Depending upon the individual spending habits, many students will also need additional money for snacks, laundry, optional (excessive) photocopying, and other incidentals.

PUBLIC FORUM ONLY:  The tuition and housing/meals charges do not include major lab photocopying expenses.  This fee will be $75 for the two-week participants and $25 for the one-week participants.  Depending upon the individual spending habits, many students will also need additional money for snacks, laundry, optional (excessive) photocopying, and other incidentals.

TRAVEL TO CAMPUS

For a $25 fee, Institute shuttles will run between both the airport and bus station for participants’ arrival and departure.  If you attend, more information will be sent to you later on how this system will operate.  Taxis are available, of course, if you prefer, but this mode is more expensive.
