WHAT KENTUCKY OFFERS

OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY WITH SOME OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY

The KNDI offers an ideologically and pedagogically diverse teaching faculty and, unlike many summer debate institutes, students at Kentucky are not confined exclusively to their individual lab setting. Instead, KNDI debaters interact with the entire policy faculty. Similarly, with its Fellows Program, the KNDI attracts some of the top high school debaters in the country. These outstanding debaters who make up the Fellows lab are dispersed among all of the labs to act as mentors. Thus, all debaters attending Kentucky have an opportunity to work with some of the nation's best.

THE KENTUCKY TRADITION

Founded by Dr. J. W. Patterson, the Kentucky Institute is one of the oldest in the country having run continuously since 1961. Alumni of the Kentucky Institute, at one time or another, have won every major invitational tournament as well as the national Tournament of Champions and the NFL and NCFL National Championships.

EXPERIENCED FACULTY

Kentucky Institute students study with some of the nation's most accomplished faculty. The Kentucky faculty is comprised of nationally acclaimed debaters and top-tier high school and college coaches. Faculty members at Kentucky are selected because of their ability and commitment in teaching the vital critical thinking research and communication skills necessary for being an effective debate competitor.

2010 POLICY STAFF

jon sharp – is Co-Director of Debate at the University of Kentucky and Director of the Fellows Program at the KNDI. As a debater for Emory, jsharp won the Harvard and West Georgia tournaments, as well as the Dartmouth Round Robin, and was top speaker at Pittsburgh, Louisville, and the University of Kansas' Heart of America. In addition, sharp has coached teams to multiple CEDA National championships as well as the deep elimination rounds of virtually all major college tournaments, including the NDT. The world would be a sadder place if debating only meant reading stuff that other people handed you. Work with jsharp and learn to debate for yourself. Emory, West Georgia, USC, and even New Trier have profited from the exploitation of his unusual mode of instruction. You could be next. You should be next.

Brian Manual – Brian has been coaching debate for nine years. His extraordinary abilities have enabled him to create and rebuild programs from the bottom up. Brian has coached at Scranton High School, the Cathedral Preparatory School, and Chattahoochee High School (2008-09). Brian's teams have participated in elimination rounds of every major national tournament, including the TOC, and have had final round appearances at Wake Forest, Bronx Science, The University of Michigan, and the 2007 National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament. He has coached the champions of the 2003 Bronx Science tournament and the 2008 Barkley Forum at Emory. Brian has been the recipient of the Lexington Coaching Award given to a coach for unwavering dedication to the activity. In addition to the KNDI, Brian is also a member of the Stanford National Forensics Institute faculty. Currently, Brian coaches at Lakeland High School in addition to his work with Harvard University and Planet Debate.

Jim Schultz – A giant both figuratively and literally, he has achieved outstanding success both as a high school coach and as a college debater (though he has reversed the usual order). As a debater he has reached the elimination rounds of virtually all the top college tournaments, including the NDT (quarter-finals in 2008) and Wake Forest (semi-finals in 2008). He has coached at Celebration High School, Georgetown Day School, and Calhoun High School, and he has previously taught at the Gonzaga debate Institute and the Michigan National Debate Institute.

Alex Lamballe – Alex is one of the most successful of active college debaters. He has won both NFL Nationals and the university-level National Debate Tournament. He has also finished first at a number of other national college tournaments, including the University of Southern California, California State University at Fullerton, the University of West Georgia, and the Kentucky Round Robin. As an excellent policy-oriented debater himself, he is especially strong in teaching policy debate skills.

Karen Harrison – Karen is an outstanding debater at the University of Georgia. She has reached the elimination rounds in numerous major college debate tournaments, including Northwestern, West Georgia, Vanderbilt, and Liberty. She is a former Kentucky Institute Fellow. She was a two-time qualifier to the Tournament of Champions, where she was fourth speaker in 2005.

Mike Gentile — Michael has been a part of the policy debate community his entire life. As a high school student at the Georgetown Day School, he was a participant in the late elims of numerous major high school tournaments. For the past 6 years he has been an assistant coach at the Georgetown Day School, coaching teams to the late elims of major high school tournaments, including St. Marks, The Barkley Forum, Michigan, MBA, New Trier, Harvard, and UC-Berkeley, as well as the NDCA Championships and the Tournament of Champions. Currently, Michael is studying for a degree in English from the University of Kentucky where he is a member of the debate team. He has been a participant in the elims at USC, Fullerton, and National Debate Tournament, to name a few. This will be his third summer working as an instructor at the KNDI and fourth at the institute since he was named a Fellow in the summer of 2002.

Garrett Abelkop – Garrett Abelkop completed his outstanding career as a Michigan State debater with a first round bid, a speaker award, and an elimination round appearance at the 2009 National Debate Tournament. This was the third year in a row in which he had reached the NDT elimination rounds. As a senior in high school, he was also a finalist at the TOC. He has previously taught at the Spartan Debate Institute and the Miami Debate Institute. He currently works with both the Chattahoochee High School and the University of Kentucky debate programs.

Finally, watch this space: Additional staff will be added as they are confirmed.

Institute participants must be in high school grades nine through twelve during the 2010-2011 school year. Exceptions may be granted by the Director.

SCHOLARSHIPS

We have a limited number of partial scholarships which will be awarded to students with exceptional ability but who cannot attend without financial assistance. Students applying for financial aid should have applications in by Monday, May 3, 2010, with a $200 deposit. WE CANNOT CONSIDER YOUR REQUEST UNLESS IT IS ACCOMPANIED BY A $200 DEPOSIT. Please make checks payable to "Kentucky Debate Institute." If you are denied a scholarship and do not choose to attend the Institute, your $200 will be refunded if a refund is requested by June 1.

LODGING

All student dorms are double occupancy, and students are responsible for BRINGING THEIR OWN LINENS (sheets, blankets, pillows, pillowcases, towels, etc.). The beds are extra long twin size (36x80). You are also encouraged to bring a small reading lamp. The Institute will attempt to honor mutual roommate requests. The dorms are fully equipped with air conditioning, vending machines, and laundry facilities. Each floor has a lounge and shower facilities. Students are carefully supervised by designated Institute dormitory staff and by their daytime instructors. Roll-calls, room-checks, and lights-out are part of our regular monitoring procedures. Students may not leave the campus during the Institute except for designated restaurants and stores adjacent to campus and with Institute staff for official Institute events. As an official UK program, the Institute has close ties to the UK Police and the nationally respected University of Kentucky Hospital system, located one short block from our dorms.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Morning assemblies with roll call, as well as nightly building check-in and room checks, are part of a daily routine. Adult staff and faculty of the institute reside in the dorms to maintain supervision. Students will not be permitted to leave the campus except to designated stores and fast food restaurants adjacent to the campus, unless escorted by their parents or by the Institute Staff for Institute sponsored functions.

COSTS NOT INCLUDED IN TUITION AND FOOD

Depending upon the individual spending habits, many students will also need additional money for snacks, laundry, optional (excessive) photocopying, and other incidentals.

TRAVEL TO CAMPUS

For a $25 fee, Institute shuttles will run between both the airport and bus station for participants' arrival and departure. If you attend, more information will be sent to you later on how this system will operate. Taxis are available, of course, if you prefer, but this mode is more expensive.
