#Altmetrics: Demystifying the Link between Research Impact and Social Media

Open Access Week Event

Date: Tuesday, October 22, 2013 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm
Location: UK Athletics Auditorium, William T. Young Library
Presenter: Dr. Sean Burns, Dr. Derek Lane, Dr. Carl Mattacola

As social media has become a day-to-day communication avenue, more scholars have turned to it to share ideas and comment on research studies.  Although these online interactions may contribute to research assessment, they are not accounted for by traditional impact metrics.  To address this new scholarly communication landscape, some academics have asserted the importance of altmetrics.

UK Libraries will host a panel discussion during Open Access Week (Oct. 21-27) to encourage a fruitful conversation about altmetrics and research assessment.  Three UK faculty members will provide an overview of altmetrics, address the perceptions of them from the perspectives of author and journal editor, and discuss metrics for research assessment and faculty evaluation at UK.  Details of this event are available at:
