This cross-disciplinary undergraduate certificate will prepare students to apply knowledge of sustainable systems and the food environment in developing, and implementing, evidence-based strategies to end hunger.

Obtain the Knowledge to Implement Solutions for Food Security

Program curriculum is relevant to fields such as healthcare, the nonprofit sector, public health, social work, farm management, agricultural biotechnology, and more! Our program requires students to complete four (4) required courses (total of 9 credit hours) and one (1) three credit hour elective course related to their personal and professional interest. Required courses:

 

  • DHN 318 Hunger, Food Behavior, and the Environment (3 credit hours) 

  • DHN 319 Seminar in Hunger Studies (1 credit hours) 

  • DHN 320 Experiential Learning in Hunger Studies (2 credit hours) 

  • SAG 210 Introduction to Sustainable Agriculture and Community Food Systems (3 credit hours) 

Choose 3 Credit Hours of Pre-Approved Elective Coursework (pre-req and schedule varies by course) 

  • AEC 309 International Agriculture, World Food Needs, and U.S. Trade in Agriculture Products
  • AFE 300 Special Topics in Agriculture, Food and Environment: (Subtitle Required)*
  • ANT 225 Culture, Environment, and Global Issues
  • ANT 251 Global Health Inequalities
  • CPH 201 Introduction to Public Health: Theory and Methods
  • ECO 450G The Economics of Poverty and Inequality

*Approved subtitles only.

Other courses, including education abroad and special topics courses, may also be appropriate to fulfill this requirement.  Such courses must be pre-approved by the Certificate Director.
