FMMC 04-18 – MEDICAL GAS ALARMS

Effective: June 11, 1998
Reviewed:  November 28, 2012
Revised:  April 12, 2017, January 19, 2023

INFORMATION

Medical gases are part of the Life Support Systems. Included are medical oxygen, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, medical compressed air, and vacuum. It is important to respond to alarms for these systems since they indicate an abnormal condition which could affect patient care. Emergency procedures must be implemented immediately to correct the problem.

POLICY

Alarms received in H-64 or via phone from persons in user areas must be answered immediately. Appropriate personnel must be notified and/or vendors to restore the system to normal in the shortest possible time.

PROCEDURES

  1. Medical Oxygen - If line pressure drops below 40 pounds per square inch, an alarm will activate indicating insufficient pressure. The dispatcher shall notify personnel as follows:
  2. Maintenance person on duty should call one of the managers listed below as well as Lisa Wright and Derek Crouse:

  1. The maintenance person assigned will check the system to determine the cause of the problem. If there are no obvious leaks in the system or other reasons for the pressure problem, maintenance should notify Oxygen supplier for immediate assistance at 800-772-9247.  GS Tank account: 2025737.  Chandler Tank account: 8523715
  2. If oxygen low level alarm sounds, it is necessary to call the vendor, Prax Air to confirm replenishment of the oxygen supply in the main tank, See note 3 for phone number and associated account numbers for each location.
