II. INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

The goal of our Integrated Pest Management Program is to completely eliminate cockroaches, other pest insects, mice and rats from the University of Kentucky Medical Center facilities. Our integrated pest management is based on the monitoring of pest infestations and the subsequent elimination of such problems with the appropriate use of sanitation in conjunction with the use of mechanical, chemical and biological control methods.

The following items are the components of an integrated pest management and pest elimination program:

1.      Inspection and Sightings

1.      The following areas are thoroughly inspected and treated as necessary on a monthly basis:

2.      Medical Center Kitchen

3.      Medical Center Cafeteria

4.      Medical Center Coffee Shop

5.      Medical Center Big Blue Deli

6.      In all Medical Center Areas sightings are reported by employees as they occur to the PPDMC Dispatch area either via the on-line work order system or by calling 323-6281. In addition, UK Healthcare Medical Center personnel are requested to report any pest sightings to their supervisors who should provide a report to the Physical Plant Division Dispatch who will contact Pest Prevention personnel when they make their regular visit.

7.      Pest problems in patient rooms are given immediate priority and should be reported by staff immediately upon sighting to the PPDMC Dispatch area either via the on-line work order system or by calling 323-6281.

8.      Personnel are requested to obtain specimens whenever possible. Do not throw them away even if they have been damaged or smashed during collection.

2.      Sanitation

Good sanitation is the basis of integrated pest management. Sanitation modifications specified in the pest management plan must be implemented before pest elimination can be accomplished. Sanitation reports will be made after each follow up inspection and problems indicated must be rectified if successful and long term pest management is to be accomplished.

3.      Access

The pest management specialist will have complete access to all potential pest harborage areas. Any physical modifications necessary to allow inspection will be made by UKMC as required.

      4.  Written Reports

Monthly Written Integrated Pest Management Reports are provided to Medical Center Physical Plant Division for the following areas:

    Medical Center Kitchen

    Medical Center Cafeteria

    Medical Center Coffee Shop

    Medical Center Big Blue Deli

    GS Cafeteria

    GS Trash Dock

2nd and 5th Floor OR areas

    And any other sightings noted

                 5. Sightings that are reported during the month in all other portions of the Medical Center:

Written reports strive to provide the following information:

                    WO number referenced

                    Date of sighting

                    Person making the report

                    Pest sighted

Room and area that the pest was sighted

Date of the Pest Prevention response

                    Technician responding

                    Results of the inspection

                    Pests found and where found

                    Pest management strategies implemented

                    Persons contacted on site

                    Rodent Control

Provided as needed using mechanical mouse traps, snap traps, and bait stations. PPDMC is still contacted for bird, opossum and other animal problems through the same system as our Pest Control Program. Currently, Critter Control is used for these services, larger animals.

All pesticides used will be registered with the Environmental Protection Agency. Labels and material safety data sheets will be provided on request.

III. DETAILED PEST MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

A. DIETARY AREAS

The dietary areas are very susceptible to infestation by German and American cockroaches especially considering the amount of material transported into this area from other locations and the proximity from this area to the sub-basement. This area is inspected monthly and any of the listed pest management methods may be used to manage the pest situation in this area.

Short residual aerosols can be used to flush cockroaches from harborage areas. Vacuum cleaners are used to collect all live and dead cockroaches exposed during control procedures. Aerosol driven silica gel and/or boric acid may be applied into all appropriate cracks and crevices. Void areas in walls and other locations can be treated with long residual dusts. Equipment and appliances are often dismantled and treated with dusts, sprays or baits. Long residual liquid insecticides mixed with insect growth regulators can also be applied as spot or crack and crevice treatments in the kitchen, dining room, employee locker rooms and the dish room. These control efforts are always implemented at night while the facility is closed.

Zone monitors are placed in areas of high cockroach activity to monitor activity between visits. Employee reports on cockroach sightings are requested to provide immediate information on pests. This information is essential to keeping pest populations out of the kitchen.

B. ALL CAFATERIA/SNACK SHOP AREAS

These areas need to be completely inspected and treated with appropriate baits, dusts, insect growth regulators and sprays during down times. Several trips may be necessary to the same location if down times are too short.

C. SUB-BASEMENT - H46

This area is inspected periodically, usually quarterly. The American cockroaches are reduced with the use of vacuum cleaners. Granular, directed and containerized baits are used in conjunction with liquid sprays and insect growth regulators to control this source of infestation.

D. PATIENT CARE AREAS

Pest problems in patient rooms are given immediate priority. These areas are inspected and treatments are made as necessary.

E. ALL UK MEDICAL CENTER BUILDINGS included with this Pest Control management program:

Pest problems in less critical areas of the Medical Center Complex are reported to the Medical Center Physical Plant and a work order is created for the incident. Pest Management personnel will respond to these pest sightings weekly.

Each work order is processed and the pest management strategies implemented are recorded on each work order and a copy is forwarded to Physical Plant Division. Long residual baits, including paste baits, directed baits and physical removal with vacuum cleaners will be emphasized in places with existing infestations or the potential for supporting an infestation.
