FMMC 10-18 – WORK SITE SAFETY PROCEDURES

Effective: January 25, 1994
Revised: August 10, 2012
Reviewed: December 2013

POLICY

Physical Plant Division, in the performance of its duties in construction, maintenance, and operations, will strive to ensure the safety of visitors, patients, and staff.

1.   Work is usually done inside rooms, thus allowing the corridor wall to form the primary barrier between the work zone and the public zone. When there is any questions regarding the safety of the room occupants, or when any substantial amount of work is to be done, the work is delayed until the room is vacated.

2.   In cases where the work extends outside the room and into a corridor or other public area, appropriate barricades must be put in place. All barriers must have approved ICRA and ILSM documentation.

3.   If the work is being done overhead, appropriate barricades will be put in place to prevent pedestrian traffic from entering the unsafe zone as required.

4.   Outside work which includes excavation, demolition, or any hazardous activity requires the use of barricades suitable to keep unwanted traffic away from the work site and done according to OSHA regulations.

5.   At the end of the work day, all items, such as ladders or carts, will be secured inside the work zone or removed from the site.

6.   When power cords must be run outside the work zone, every effort must be made to avoid placing cords across the path of travel. When a cord or hose must traverse a path of travel, they should be suspended on the ceiling whenever practical. If it is necessary that a hose or cord lie across a path of travel on the floor, tape it securely to the floor and place a "Caution" sign. Appropriate caution signs or tape will be used as conditions warrant.

7.   Outside contractors must follow the above policy. The project manager is responsible to ensure that this is done.
