FMMC 10-21 STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR ELECTROSTATIC PAINTING

Revised: August 10, 2012

INFORMATION

Electrostatic painting is a process utilizing the property which states that opposite magnetic poles attract. This means that an electrical charge between a metal object being painted and the painting device (sprayer) causes the paint to be directly applied without overspray. However, due to the chemical composition of the paint, vapors/fumes may be offensive to building occupants if certain precautions are not taken.

1.   If painting can be done on evenings, weekends, or during off hours, this should be our first option.

2.   Whenever possible, objects to be painted should be moved out of occupied areas.

3.   If painting must be done in the owner's space, determine if room has dedicated exhaust or a return air system. If the room has a dedicated exhaust, this may be sufficient to exhaust fumes from the painting process. If air is being returned, another means of exhaust must be found. Contact Infection Prevention and Control at 3-6337 to obtain ICRA laying out infection control requirements.

4.   On return air systems:

a.   Blank off return air grill.

b.   Tape off doors common to adjacent areas.

c.   If room has windows, exhaust through open window using portable fan for this purpose.

d.   If room is interior or has no windows, the special fan and flexible duct must be used to exhaust fumes/vapors.
