INFORMATION

Facilities Management answers intercom calls from all elevators within the Medical Center and when necessary, dispatches appropriate staff to correct the problem.

PROCEDURE

  1. All elevators are equipped with intercoms to be used as means of communication with passengers needing assistance in elevators. Delta will answer the call immediately.
  2. When it is determined that an elevator is stalled, Delta must take the following steps:
    1. Try and keep the passengers calm and assure them that help is on the way.
    2. Verify the building and elevator number they are calling from and ask which floor is shown on the indicator inside the elevator.
    3. Stay in constant contact or on line with passenger(s) until the elevator is found and opened for passenger(s) to exit.
    4. Instruct the passenger(s) to check to be sure there is a floor button light lit and also to check the Emergency Stop Switch. (If switch has been accidentally actuated, ask them to release the button.) If the car responds, no further action is required. If the car remains stalled, proceed to the step e.
    5. Determine how many passengers are in the stalled elevator and if anyone is in need of medical attention. Ask specifically whether patients are being transported, or if anyone in the elevator is ill.
    6. If medical attention is required by a passenger or a patient is being transported, call 323-6215 and tell them the location of the elevator, the floor at which it is stalled and ask them to send a physician or nurse to the elevator.
    7. Call Facilities Management Medical Center Dispatch at 323-6285 and transfer all information about the elevator location and passengers onboard.
  3. When Facilities Management Medical Center Dispatch is notified they must take the following steps:
    1. Call Lexington Fire Department to initiate their response.
    2. Call the appropriate elevator service company to initiate their response and explain the urgency of the situation.
    3. Dispatch a maintenance technician to the location for support only.  FMMC personnel shall never access an elevator hoistway.  Only the Lexington Fire Department or elevator service company should access the hoistway.
  4. When the maintenance technician arrives they must communicate with the passengers. Assure them of their safety, ask them not to smoke, tell them the fire department and elevator service company are on their way and to stay clear of the door when it is opened.  FMMC personnel shall never access an elevator hoistway.
  5. After passengers are removed inform Facilities Management Medical Center Dispatch that the rescue is complete.
