FMMC 10-25 – HAZARD COMMUNICATION

POLICY

All PPDMC employees shall receive training in the hazards of chemicals and products which they must deal with. Initial training shall be done during the orientation process for new employees and as needed when new chemicals are introduced to the work site.

PROCEDURE

  1. All new employees will receive initial training during the I-9 process with an overview of information required by OSHA.
  2. Thereafter, supervisors are responsible for ongoing training of employees in their respective areas. Supervisors shall inform employees about chemical hazards in their work place when new or different products are brought into their work area.
  3. All training shall be documented. The documentation shall include items covered, the date when conducted, roster of who attended, who provided the training, and placed in employee personnel folder.
  4. Employee must be informed at least of the following:
    1. List of hazardous chemicals used/stored in their work place.
    2. Location of MSDS documents and how to interpret the information.
    3. Explain the OSHA requirement of "right to know".
    4. Explain which products used by employee are hazardous and how he/she can protect themselves (what protective equipment is required to be worn, if any).
    5. Explain how to interpret the label (if employee has a literacy problem, explain what the label says).
    6. Instruct him/her on methods of observation, smells, visual appearance, especially when employees work in labs and areas with chemicals unknown to the PPD employee.
    7. Environmental Health must be called for all spills at 323-6280 or 257-6156 evenings.
  5. Contractors who work in areas with hazardous chemicals must be notified by the coordinator of the project. Likewise, the contractor must notify PPDMC of any hazardous materials they bring on the premises.
