Encouraging, inspiring and supportive – these are traits Sonja Feist-Price values; traits she strives to embody for students.
Feist-Price recently began her tenure as University of Kentucky vice president for Institutional Diversity, a job she says puts her in the position to give back to students – helping them achieve their potential and realize all the opportunities that exist for them.
"In many ways, I have always been a leader. I'm always thinking about ways to help advance the campus community for students, faculty and staff," said Feist-Price. "What I love most is that now it's on a much broader scale. I have a student's heart. I really have a lot of love and passion for our students."
Under Feist-Price's leadership, UK has made tremendous strides in creating a community of belonging. INSIGHT Into Diversity recently named UK a Diversity Champion – one of only 15 Diversity Champion colleges and universities across the nation.
"I want to make sure students really feel like this is their home away from home. I want them to feel like the University of Kentucky really is their "Big Blue Nation," Feist-Price said.
Feist-Price believes she has a responsibility to give back and make the college experience even better for this generation.
Her advice for students?
"Be open-minded. Seize the opportunities. Don't leave anything on the table. Take advantage of getting to know your peers. It feels safe to be around people that are similar to you, but take the challenge of meeting someone that doesn't look like you, that may not have had similar life experiences," said Feist-Price. "When everyone contributes, everyone benefits."
