It includes:
  1. The acquisition of new knowledge and understanding of living systems through the innovative and substantive application of experimental and analytical techniques based on the engineering sciences.
  2. The development of new devices, algorithms, processes and systems that advance biology and medicine and improve medical practice and health care delivery.
As used by the foundation, the term “biomedical engineering research” is thus defined in a broad sense: It includes not only the relevant applications of engineering to medicine but also to the basic life sciences.
Why Pursue Graduate Studies at UK? Biomedical engineering has existed at the University of Kentucky for almost 60 years. We started offering degrees in Biomedical Engineering nearly 30 years ago. Here is some of the things we offer our Biomedical Engineering graduate students: -The Department of Biomedical Engineering is located within short walking distance of a major academic medical center with all six health sciences colleges and the full spectrum of academic colleges on a single campus. Few engineering schools have access to such colleges all so close by. -Aided by its proximity, faculty within the department routinely collaborate with other departments in the Colleges of Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Health Sciences, Arts & Sciences and Pharmacy, as well as units such as the Markey Cancer Center, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Center, Saha Cardiovascular Research Center and Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing. -Our alumni are highly respected in their fields, whether in academia, government agencies or industry. -In 2014, the Department of Biomedical Engineering moved into renovated facilities with new labs, personalized study carrels, and access to a lounge reserved for graduate students. -In April 2016, the department received a $7 million gift from Joe and Joani Halcomb to rename the department the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering. The naming gift will add one endowed chair and two endowed faculty fellowships as well as fully-funded graduate fellowships to attract top graduate students and support their research.  https://www.uky.edu/academics/sites/www.uky.edu.academics/files/Dr%20Zhang%20BME.jpg Dr. Guigen Zhang Professor UK has the whole package—Colleges of Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Public Health, Nursing, Design, Fine Arts, Communication, Business, Arts and Sciences, Law, Education, Social Work, Diplomacy and International Commerce and Agriculture on a single campus. As a result, we provide a transdisciplinary environment that is crucial if we are going to advance science and technology and promote economic growth in a timely and socially relevant way. The MSBST meets the needs of candidates who seek careers in healthcare, government health agencies, biomedical research, and pharmaceutical industries - which all require advanced knowledge in analyzing health science data. Students will benefit from experiential learning opportunities and formal training in applying descriptive and inferential statistics specific to biomedical research, clinical and translational studies, and public health research aimed at improving population health.   Traditional biostatistics programs train students to analyze biomedical data, with a heavy focus on data arising from clinical trials. Traditional epidemiology programs focus on the study of observational data and secondary data. Our symbiotic relationship between the departments of Biostatistics and Epidemiology provides the opportunity to train students to work as "team-scientists" to fill an emerging workforce gap in the intersection of these two fields. The MSBST teaches candidates traditional biostatistics methodology, prepares them to work alongside epidemiologists and other subject-matter experts, and provides the unique skills to work with epidemiological data such as healthcare data, case reports, and more. Furthermore, our educational opportunities will train students to work in the emerging field of health data science. The MSBST meets the needs of candidates who seek careers in healthcare, government health agencies, biomedical research, and pharmaceutical industry --- which all require advanced knowledge in analyzing health science data. Career outcomes of the MSBST program include biostatistician, data analyst, data/research scientist, and principal investigator.

Insects also serve as important models for basic studies in biological diversity, ecology, evolutionary biology, genetics, physiology, medicine, and other fields of science.   Entomologists are employed at Universities and museums,  non-profit organizations, as Extension educators, and in federal government agencies (EPA, USDA, APHIS); state departments of agriculture and public health, state agricultural research stations, agrichemical companies, agricultural consulting firms; timber and seed production companies, international development agencies, criminology and forensics, and the military.   The University of Kentucky’s Department of Entomology, celebrating its 125th continuous year of education, research and service, is one of the oldest and most productive intact units of its kind in the nation. The Department has a rich legacy of vibrant scholarship and innovative education and outreach, coupled with strong commitment to graduate education.  It is designated a nationally Top 10 Entomology Program by the Chronicle of Higher Education Faculty Scholar Activity Index, and boasts four faculty members who have served as President or been elected as Fellows of the Entomological Society of America. The UK Entomology graduate program consistently ranks among the top graduate programs at the University of Kentucky, as measured by total number of graduate student presentations and publications.  Our mission is to improve the quality of human life and protect our environment through a better understanding of insects and related arthropods. Within the department, we strive for a creative synergy between fundamental and applied entomological research, developing long-term solutions to entomological problems, while providing answers that address immediate short-term problems. We have a strong integration of research, extension, and graduate education.  The department’s response to critical entomological problems; e.g., the world-wide outbreak of bed bugs, pollinator decline, emerald ash borer, and Zika virus demonstrate how we respond to critical needs within the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the nation, and the world.   We conduct fundamental and applied research on insects; deliver information through education and outreach activities; educate graduate and undergraduate students; develop and provide resources to professionals involved in managing insect populations that affect plant, animal and human health; implement integrative and effective systems for pest/vector management; and enhance science education and public appreciation of human-insect interactions.  We strive for continuous improvement in our programs and success of our students.  Recent graduates are employed as university or college faculty, as research scientists with federal and state agencies (e.g., USDA, US Forest Service) or Industry, as extension educators, as entomologists in the military, public health agencies, or pest control firms, and as agricultural consultants, pest control specialists, and small business owners.     The personal and professional development of our faculty and staff; diversity among our students, faculty and staff; and being a collaborative part of the CAFE and the UK are among our core values.

Both programs are approved by through the National Association of School Psychologists and the Doctor of Philosophy program is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association.   A wealth of career opportunities to support children, families, schools, and communities   The school psychology programs offer a breadth of classroom choices and a wealth of field experiences.
