The Dalcroze approach has three branches: Eurhythmics trains the body to respond kinesthetically to rhythmic and dynamic concepts. Solfège trains the ear, eye, and voice in pitch, melody, and harmony. Improvisation enables students to respond to concepts according to their own invention, through movement, voice, and at an instrument. The Dalcroze Institute at the University of Kentucky emphasizes music-teaching strategies to develop imagination, coordination, and expression. | The UK Dalcroze Institute is especially designed for music teachers who wish to acquire knowledge and skills in Dalcroze pedagogy and musicianship, but eurhythmics training benefits all musicians and many others such as dancers, music therapists, and actors. Summer workshops are open to all musicians and dancers, even those with little to no piano training. Participants will be immersed in the principal subjects of the Dalcroze approach. Very few institutions in the United States offer Dalcroze Eurhythmics training. The offering of Eurhythmics at the University of Kentucky answers a demand for professional development opportunities for artists in this region and has attracted participants from overseas, especially from Asia where Eurhythmics is very well received. | Image of a student and faculty member composing music on a lined whiteboard.

Students working in Agricultural Economics, Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering, Chemical & Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Forestry & Natural Resources, Horticulture, Plant & Soil Sciences, or another Science or Engineering discipline related to Food, Energy & Water Systems can benefit from this certificate. In addition to learning about these systems and their nexus, students will gain transferable skills needed by STEM professionals, including ethics, research, communication, teaching, funding procurement, entrepreneurship, management, teamwork, conflict resolution, mentoring, leadership, and outreach. | The overall goal of this certificate is to prepare graduate students to become innovators at the nexus of food, energy and water systems. To this end, the certificate will 1) impart both conceptual and technical knowledge related to the food, energy and water nexus to students; 2) provide them with training on key transferrable skills; and 3) equip them to consider the societal, cultural, behavioral and economic aspects of research on the food, energy and water nexus. The starting point of the certificate is a multi-departmental and interdisciplinary 3 credit hour course on INFEWS. This course comprises four one-month “units”, each focused on a research question related to INFEWS requiring extensive interdisciplinary collaboration to be answered. Teams of faculty, possessing the necessary cumulative expertise, co-teach each unit, emphasizing concepts that students must understand in order to address the question at hand. Given that in addition to technical or “hard” skills, recent graduates need – but very often lack – “soft” skills, including communication, leadership and teamwork skills, in a subsequent semester students will receive training on key transferrable skills in a 3 credit hour course designed to integrate these skills with content covered in the foregoing INFEWS course. This seminar course will train participants in key skills, including ethics, research, communication, teaching, funding procurement, entrepreneurship, management, teamwork, conflict resolution, mentoring, leadership, and outreach. Completing the courses described above will give students 6 of the 12 credit hours needed to attain the INFEWS certificate. Students will earn the other 6 credits by choosing from a list of elective courses, favoring courses fulfilling both certificate and degree requirements so their anticipated time-to-degree is not extended. Notably, several of these courses will equip students to consider the societal, cultural, behavioral and economic aspects of research on the food, energy and water nexus.

Latin Studies (Graduate Certificate) | Graduate Certificate | College of Arts & Sciences | No Online Option | https://www.uky.edu/academics/graduate-certificate/as/latin-studies-graduate-certificate | latin studies, latin studies, Latin | https://www.uky.edu/academics/sites/www.uky.edu.academics/files/171107WILLYTNIGHT03A_0.JPG | The Latin Studies certificate curriculum, consisting of a sequence of four courses in Latin language and literature, aims at two groups of students in particular. First, it is aimed at graduate students who need strong Latin skills for any academic discipline in which Latin is important, including not only classics, but also history, philosophy, theology, etc., and who are already engaged in, or hope to undertake advanced study in one or more of these fields. The certificate curriculum will offer to such students an interdisciplinary opportunity to gain a superior command of Latin in a highly concentrated format, but in a relatively brief period of time. Second, it is aimed at the training of new Latin teachers for the high school level and even pre-high school instruction. The Latin studies certificate curriculum will be highly useful for those interested in teaching Latin, because it will provide a much deeper immersion in Latin language and literature than what has so far been usual for students seeking careers as Latin teachers, and will ensure that all who complete it acquire not merely reading skills, but also considerable active command of the language. | A prerequisite for entry into the Latin Studies curriculum is the successful completion of CLA 501 (Introduction to Latin Prose Composition), or the attainment of an equivalent level of competence as determined by the Director of the Latin Studies Curriculum. A candidate who completes 9 credit hours of courses that pertain to the Latin Studies curriculum and earns a GPA in those same courses of at least 3.33 may earn a Graduate Certificate in Latin Studies. The courses that pertain to the Latin Studies curriculum are CLA 521, CLA 611, and CLA 612. An independent study course under the number CLA 580 or CLA 695 may, with the permission of the Director of the Latin Studies Curriculum, count towards the minimum of 9 credit hours of Latin Studies course work needed to earn the Graduate Certificate in Latin Studies.

It is effective for both goods and services across many industries, businesses, and organizations. Companies spend a lot of money educating their current employees and place a high premium on new graduates who have already acquired knowledge in the field. The Lean Systems Program at the University of Kentucky began 25 years ago when the College of Engineering formed a partnership with Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, to teach and research lean systems. This partnership remains active today. As a result our course content is up to date and in line with Toyota, the originator and leading practitioner of Lean. Innovative and engaging teaching techniques, including carefully designed hands-on lab work improve the learning process. The Lean Graduate Certificate program is an extension of the Lean Systems Program and is open to students who have already obtained an undergraduate degree, regardless of discipline. While many students are from various engineering disciplines, non-manufacturing and non-engineering disciplines such as business, health care, and the sciences are also welcome. We believe lean principles and practices can be applied successfully in any situation where work is being performed.

The certificate will be accessible to participants enrolled in a wide range of biomedical disciplines, but it will be especially valuable to medical science graduate students that anticipate a career in academic physiology. This 15-hour certificate is significant in that many doctoral programs in the medical sciences emphasize preparation for a research-oriented career but do very little formal instruction related to education and teaching. Our department has historically placed a high emphasis on the training of graduate students for both research and teaching careers. This certificate will recognize and document that emphasis for the students that choose to complete the certificate requirements. As research in physiology becomes more specialized, utilizing molecular and cellular approaches, there is a very real and distinct demand for physiology instructors that have experience in all levels of physiology teaching, especially systems physiology.
