Health Disparities in Meat Packing
About the webinar:
This presentation will explore findings of a recent review of health disparities research in the meat packing industry. A systematic and thorough review of the literature identified 60 articles that touched on health disparities areas such as: gender/sex, race/ethnicity, language/education, class, and nativity. Participants will review the results of the study and engage in a broader discussion about why we need to consider these underlying factors that contribute to the negative health of workers in the meat packing industry. We will also assess the lack of understanding of health disparities found in most of the literature.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:
- Describe typical exposures in meat packing
- Identify potential health disparities in the meat packing workforce
- Discuss the voids in our knowledge with respect to these health disparities
SPEAKER: KERMIT DAVIS, PHD, CPE, FAIHA, FHFES
Dr. Kermit Davis is a Professor at the University of Cincinnati where he is the graduate program director of the Environmental and Occupational Hygiene and Occupational Safety and Ergonomics programs at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Davis is a past-President of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and a Fellow of HFES (2013) and American Industrial Hygiene Association (2019). His research has concentrated on reducing ergonomic stressors of healthcare workers and patients in healthcare settings (e.g. hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home healthcare). In the last year, his research has focused on virtual offices.

The Center for Occupational and Environmental Health designates this activity for a maximum of 1.0 Contact Hour. Participants should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
