West Virginia Sawmill Safety

2019
Completed Pilot Project

The specific aims of this project are to 1. Develop a survey instrument to assess the level of hazard awareness and injury risk perception among sawmill employees, including workers and management 2. Explore the level of hazard awareness and injury risk perception among sawmill workers and management in West Virginia by surveying approximately 100-150 workers and management employed at 10-12 sawmill operations throughout West Virginia. 3. Explore differences in hazard awareness and injury risk perception in the sample by analyzing mean awareness and risk perception scores between sawmill workers and sawmill management, by individual employment factors (e.g., job tenure, certifications, mill status) and organizational factors (e.g., company size, years in business). 4. Use survey results to identify the gaps in hazard awareness and injury risk perception among sawmill workers and sawmill management in order to inform the development of future targeted interventions to reduce injury in the sawmill industry.

Progress:

1. Survey instrument developed. 2. Survey administered 3. Data Analysis underway 4. Preliminary work on subset post written survey interview questions.
