PROCESS IT Strategic Plan | 46 Immediately upon his arrival at the University, Brian T. Nichols, CIO, stated among his top priorities the need to craft an enterprise-wide strategy for IT at UK. While an enterprise-wide strategy underpins many organizations, the processes used to devise a strategic plan can vary greatly depending on philosophies. From its inception, UK’s ITSP was to be developed not by input from IT leaders on campus, but rather by the broader University community that carries out the greater mission and strategies called out in UK’s Strategic Plan - Transforming Tomorrow. Beginning in fall 2016, a vision for why and how the strategic plan would be conceived was communicated to University administration, students, faculty, and staff. The process would bring together University thought leaders in a myriad of areas of expertise who would be willing to come together and brainstorm with fellow colleagues and students about the areas of strategic priority in their units and day-to-day activities as it relates to IT. Task forces and focus groups were assembled with vast participation (~100 members) from across the University. In spring 2017, brainstorming sessions were held with each of the five task forces. Chairs moderated the sessions and led discussion through all topics appropriate for their teams. The dialogue was rich and full of ideas that promise to transform the state of IT at UK as an enabler of its broader mission. Sessions were wrapped up in early March 2017 and task force notes/recommendations were provided in late March/early April 2017. ITS personnel then collated and assembled the work of the various task forces into a cohesive draft set of recommendations and action items. This draft was reviewed and edited by task force chairs, and in summer of 2017, a draft plan was both posted on the web for University-wide review and comment and printed/distributed around UK for review. In preparation for final publication, University-wide input was collated, reviewed, and edits were made as a result. Vetting of the penultimate draft was completed with task force chairs, approval by University senior- leadership was then given, and the final plan was published in January 2018.
