An AAAS minor also helps students develop analytical and critical thinking skills, contribute to the diversity of ideas at the University of Kentucky and the larger society, and offers solutions to the problems that challenge and constrict Black life.	By completing 18 hours of coursework, students can earn a minor in African American and Africana Studies. This minor offers a cultural, historical, and literary base that can strengthen any major in the Humanities or the Social Sciences as well as prepare a student for engaging people of African descent and the issues which affect them. The African American and Africana Studies Program seeks to promote the interest and knowledge of the African diaspora experience through quality teaching and research. Multidisciplinary in scope, AAAS offers a selection of courses in Anthropology, English, History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Religion, and Language. Courses affiliated with the Program are listed each Fall and Spring semester on our website and in the University Schedule of Classes under the AAS prefix.

Business Data Management (AN 324) This course introduces “big data,” – data harvesting and cleaning, relational databases, structured query language (SQL), data warehousing and online analytical processing (OLAP). Emphasis is placed on data structure, database design, data queries and data manipulation. Business Data Mining (AN 420G) Data mining involves tools and techniques that help analysts numerically and visually explore vast data sets, classify data, predict outcomes, or identify associations, patterns, and exceptional events. The goal is for the coach, or teacher, to support the athlete(s) in achieving a specific goal by providing training and guidance. It involves aspects of physical education pedagogy, health promotion, and kinesthetic principles in preparing athletes for performance. The curriculum for the coaching minor arms students with foundations of coaching, psychological and sociological aspects of coaching, and strategies for team development. Additionally, an independent study in which students assist with coaching a local team of athletes prepares them to experience working under a mentor, to learn different coaching philosophies, to train athletes, and to coach in game conditions. This minor allows the student to select a number of electives, which may include strength and conditioning principles for sports, basic exercise physiology, athletic training content, sports officiating, sport management information for organized sports, and more advanced psychology of sport and physical activity content.

The most important skills that employers want universities to emphasize are (a) critical thinking and analytical reasoning, (b) the ability to analyze and solve complex problems, and (c) the ability to communicate effectively in writing (Hart Research, 2015). These are exactly the skills you'll develop and practice with a Minor in PTW. In (non-WRD) college courses that require writing, the focus is typically trained on only one or two forms: the finished essay or report. But professionals in every field make knowledge every day through many other forms of writing, too. Such genres are often informal, temporary, coordinative, and transformative. This is how professional and organizational knowledge is produced. According to a 2015 Hart Research study, the ability to communicate effectively in writing and the ability to communicate effectively orally are among the top four skills employers tell colleges to emphasize. We see in articles and blog posts, over and over, the need for students from across the disciplines to write well. And we know that demand for technical writers remains strong. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, career prospects (2012–2022) for technical writers are nearly double that of other media jobs, with projections strongly outpacing the rate of aggregate occupations in the U.S. economy. The organizations that hire UK students will assume that they’re good at things their major covered. What they really want are candidates who are good at writing and communicating in the ways that professionals write and communicate. This is what the PTW Minor is designed to address.
