41 | EmpoweringTransformation CONCLUSION Our vision requires the University of Kentucky (UK) to be Kentucky’s indispensable institution, by transforming the lives of our students and advancing the Commonwealth we serve – and beyond – through our teaching and learning, diversity and inclusion, discovery, research and creativity, promotion of health, and deep community engagement. Brian Nichols’ first imperative as the CIO at UK has been to develop a community-driven Information Technology Strategic Plan (ITSP) in support of the UK mission, vision, and strategic plan. To that end, UK’s ITSP takes a holistic approach to developing a long-term strategy, one that addresses the broader institutional role in IT advancement, and is consistent with the University’s long-term vision. The effort to develop the comprehensive strategy was strategic in nature and driven by a community of University stakeholders that represented the diverse nature of work by our students, faculty, and staff. This plan offers a clear articulation of a vision for the future through the concept of IT Abundance. It outlines recommendations and specific action items. As with the UK Strategic Plan, the ITSP frames some of the choices we will collectively make as an institution — for those we educate, for those we help and treat, and for those who will be affected tomorrow by research and discovery that is only the glint of an idea today. Through this unified ITSP, established from many diverse perspectives and voices, IT will become a strategic differentiator – helping the University push forth its goal to be the University for Kentucky, for today’s generation and those who will follow.
