Visiting Distinguished Faculty: Dr. Virginia Kraus

Jul 5, 2016

Please join us as we welcome Dr. Virginia Kraus to UK on April 12th from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm .  Please see the attached flyer for information about her research presentation.

Dr. Kraus has been invited as a Visiting Distinguished Faculty member.  Hanna Hoch was awarded a Myrle E. and Verle D. Nietzel Visiting Distinguished Faculty Program Award in conjunction with the defense of her dissertation.  I bring this to your attention because the Visiting Distinguished Faculty award is a great way to take advantage of the expertise of faculty outside of the UK community. The Visiting Distinguished Faculty (VDF) program is intended to enhance the scholarly environment for doctoral students and graduate faculty.

Upon acceptance of the award, Dr. Virginia Byers Kraus, professor of medicine at Duke University, will serve as the Graduate School’s Outside Examiner for Hanna’ dissertation defense.  As with all outside examiners, Visiting Distinguished Faculty serving in this role are appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School.

In addition to participating in the dissertation defense, Dr. Kraus is required to conduct a colloquium at UK on her research.

The goals of the program are to enrich the dissertation experience for selected doctoral students whose dissertations are judged to be especially meritorious, and to publicize for academic leaders at other institutions the high quality of scholarship achieved by our doctoral students. This program also serves to enhance the overall intellectual and research environment at the University of Kentucky through colloquia offered by some of the nation’s most outstanding scholars.
The Graduate School will provide the funding to bring a nationally recognized academic leader to campus to serve as the Graduate School’s Outside Examiner for a student’s dissertation. As the Outside Examiner, the distinguished visitor will serve as the Dean’s representative at the final examination. The distinguished visitor will be expected to promote especially high standards in the examination of candidates.
