Announcing ESL 095: Academic Writing for International Graduate Students

Jul 7, 2016

The Graduate School is pleased to announce that UK’s Center for English as a Second Language is offering a new course this fall titled Academic Writing for International Graduate Students (ESL 095). As an 09X course, this 3-credit-hour class does not count toward graduation degree requirements, nor does it figure into the graduate GPA. The 09X designation allows the class to count toward full-time student status while encouraging the student to focus on improving his/her writing skills. Please see below for the course description and learning outcomes. Also attached is a draft of the course syllabus to preview and share with interested graduate students. (Note that the course capacity for this initial semester is 15 students.)

CESL is also offering ESL 090, English for International TAs, which is a new version of what was previously ENG 098. This 3-credit-hour course is required for all new international TAs who score “conditional” on their language screenings. The course is also open, with instructor approval, to any international TA seeking to improve English language skills for classroom or lab teaching and to those preparing for an optional rescreening to move from a Type 3 or 4 TA to a Type 1 or 2. (Note that the course capacity is 12, though it may be expanded to accommodate more if needed.)

Questions should be directed to the instructor of both classes, Angela Garner ( angela.garner@uky.edu ). The course syllabus can be viewd at this link:
