Jamie Suhr came all the way from the West Coast to spend his first day in Physical Therapy school in the College of Health Sciences Monday.

Suhr, a 29-year-old native of Boise, Idaho, attended his first class — physiology — and he came away impressed.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 15, 2022) — Two faculty members in Physician Assistant Studies are assuming new leadership roles, the chair of the department announced today.

Kevin Schuer, DrPH, PA-C, has accepted the position of PA program director, while Leslie Woltenberg, PhD, will become the new Director of Graduate Studies, said Virginia Valentin, DrPH, PA-C, and chair of the Physician Assistant Studies department.

Maggie Casteel Smith’s patient had trouble sleeping.

Upon further questioning, she discovered the patient was using marijuana, and apparently had a history of abuse as a child. What to do?

“In my plan, I referred her to psychiatry to obtain counseling for her past trauma,” Casteel Smith said. “As a provider, we must get to the true root of a patient’s problem, and in this case, it seems as though the root of my patient’s trouble sleeping was actually childhood trauma.”

As part of the class’s goal to participate in charitable events and enjoy each other outside of class, the UK Physician Assistant Studies Class of '24 decided to take a break from the arduous academic year and put into practice “healthy brain – healthy body” by participating in the Ultramarathon event at “The Survive the Night Relays” on June 17-18.

The 43-year-old non-traditional student was one of many who coped with a changing world during the pandemic. But she felt it harder than most.

On Friday, June 3, the College of Health Sciences celebrated our Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2023 as they participated in their White Coat Ceremony — where students recite their oaths of commitment and receive their white coats, symbolizing the start of their journey to become Physician Assistants.

It was while working as a clinical research associate in the Neurology Department at UK, as well as volunteering in a medical mission in a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, that PA student Ghadah Karasneh knew she wanted to help people.

“During these experiences, I found a lot of joy in working with patients, and found it very rewarding and satisfying,” she said.

The 2022 CHS Student Awards was a feel-good, end-of-the-year celebration of achievement held in the Worsham Cinema in the Gatton Student Center.
