Student Tax FAQ

Why did I receive a 1098-T form?

You received a form because higher education costs may be eligible for federal tax benefits. Our records show that you were enrolled in courses at the university which were billed in the calendar year. Additional information regarding the benefit can be found on the 1098-T form.

What should I do with the 1098-T form?

You received a form because higher education costs may be eligible for federal tax benefits. Whether you may take advantage of these tax credits depends upon your individual facts and circumstances - information which is known only to you. To find out more about the credits and your eligibility, you may consult a tax professional or IRS publications. You may also call 1-800-TAX-FORM for IRS publications and forms, or visit their website www.irs.gov.

Am I eligible to claim the tax credit?

The University cannot provide tax advice. Whether you may take advantage of these tax credits depends upon your individual facts and circumstances, information which is known only to you. To find out more about the credits and your eligibility, you may consult a tax professional or IRS publications. You may also call 1-800-TAX-FORM for IRS publications and forms, or visit their website www.irs.gov.

I opted to receive my 1098-T by paper and have not received it.

If you opted to receive your 1098-T by paper prior to December 31, forms will be mailed to your permanent address by January 31.  Please allow 2 weeks for delivery.

Why haven't I received my 1098-T form?

The University processes 1098-T forms each year electronically in mid-January.  If the student has opted to receive the 1098-T by paper, mailing occurs the last week of January to the permanent address on file.

The SSN on the 1098-T is wrong. How can I get it corrected?

To change the SSN on the 1098-T, the student must contact the Registrar's Office to have the social security number changed in the computer system. Once this has been completed, a new 1098-T will be generated.

A 1098-T is not available online for my student ID.

If your tuition was calculated in December of the previous tax year, the fees were reported to the IRS in that year.  Verify that box 7, on your previous year 1098-T, was checked indicating that the academic year began the next calendar year.

Estimated Account Statement FAQ

What is an estimated account statement?

The estimated account statement provides estimated totals for tuition and fees, course and program fees, housing and dining fees, and accepted financial aid awards.  These estimates are provided to give you an idea of your total account balance for a future term.

  • Tuition and fees – determined by the number of credit hours for the courses in which you are registered
  • Course and program fees – determined by the program in which you are enrolled and the courses and sections you selected
  • Housing charges - determined by the housing option you chose
  • Dining charges - determined by the dining plan you chose
  • Financial aid - reflects only those awards that have been accepted, with all required documents completed

What happens if I drop or add courses?

  • If you add to full-time status your estimated tuition and fees will change to reflect full-time status.
  • If you drop to part-time status your estimated tuition and fees will change to reflect part-time status.

If I change my housing or dining choices will this actually change my dorm or dining plan?

A change in your estimated housing and dining choices will only reflect different charges for that housing or dining option.  You would need to contact Housing or Dining to make an actual change to your contract.

What if only part of my financial aid awards are displayed on the estimated statement?

  • Financial aid awards must be accepted and all required documents completed.
  • You can go to the myUK portal Student Services tab to check your award status:
    • Financials>Financial Aid>View and Accept Awards
    • Financials>Financial Aid>Documents

Will I receive an actual account statement?

  • Actual account statements will be sent to your UK assigned email the first of each month in which you have an unpaid balance.

    • First Fall – usually Aug 1st or 2nd

    • First Spring – usually Jan 2nd or 3rd
