Celebrate World Voice Day

By Ryan Clark
CHS Communications Director

It’s time, once again, for all of us in the College of Health Sciences to allow our voices to be heard — just in time for World Voice Day.

World Voice Day, which is today, April 16, will be celebrated with a symposium on Thursday.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Michigan State University, and the University of Kentucky are inviting vocal artists, clinicians and scientists to a World Voice Day event entitled, “The III Symposium: A Day of Voice at the University of Illinois,” from 3:30 to 5 p.m. CST, April 18. More information can be found here:  https://spaa.shs.illinois.edu/symposium/ .

The virtual conference aims to raise awareness of the vital role the human voice plays in communication and art. This event is free and open to all, with no registration required.

World Voice Day is an annual event that occurs on April 16 and is celebrated worldwide. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the importance of the human voice and its role in effective communication.

Keiko Ishikawa, PhD, MM, CCC-SLP, and UK’s Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, is collaborating with Dr. Pasquale Bottalico and Dr. Lady Catherine Cantor-Cutiva, as well as Professor Yvonne Redman, to organize the symposium. Two years ago, the event started as an initiative of the University of Illinois, and last year, the University of Kentucky was invited to co-host the event.

“Join us in celebrating World Voice Day, a global event dedicated to the marvels and significance of the human voice!” Ishikawa said. “This special day shines a spotlight on the profound impact of voice in the realms of art, vocal health and science. Voice is not just a fundamental tool for communication; it is also a powerful medium through which we express our emotions, artistic talents, and cultural heritage.

“By recognizing the importance of maintaining vocal health and advancing vocal science, we can enhance our understanding and appreciation of this unique human ability,” she continued. “Whether you’re a singer, speaker, educator, or enthusiast, World Voice Day is an opportunity to learn, share and rejoice in the diverse ways our voices enrich our lives and connect us across the globe. Let’s come together online to honor this incredible aspect of human expression!”
