Emily Martin could barely contain her excitement.

“I’m most excited about being in a new city with new opportunities,” said the 17-year-old from Smiths Grove, Ky. “All the while being able to further my education and get closer to having my dream job.”

The Human Health Sciences major (pre-med track) joined hundreds of other students Thursday at the Student Center as they were officially welcomed by CHS officials.

More than 370 freshmen will be starting their classes in the College of Health Sciences this semester — the largest class in the history of the college. This also makes up more than 1,550 students enrolled overall — also the largest number ever. 

Karen Badger, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Undergraduate Education, spoke to the crowd, and Academic Affairs Coordinator Susan Herrick gave the students tips for success.

Heather Hardesty, Senior Academic Advisor, gave an introduction to the Office of Student Affairs.

“We want our students to excel beyond even their own expectations,” Herrick said. “The challenging programs in the College of Health Sciences require a high level of commitment and sustained effort. These tips I shared are time-honored wisdom from CHS students and advisors and are the strategies our most successful undergraduates’ use. Students who utilize the Roadmap for Success will maximize their time management, planning, and collaborative skills in pursuit of their healthcare degree and career.”

“I am a pre-med student and am majoring in Human Health Sciences on the general track,” said Eli Hamm, an 18-year-old from Greenup County, Ky. “I am most excited for meeting new people with similar interests and learning about a variety of topics pertaining to medicine.”

Others were interested in cheering on their favorite college football team.

“I am most excited about meeting new people and getting involved with organizations, along with cheering on the Wildcats on Saturdays!” said Emilee Miller, an 18-year-old from Pineville, Ky., who is majoring in Human Health Sciences on the pre-physical therapy track.

Peyton Ramsey is 18 and hails from Stanford, Ky. He’s also in HHS, but on the pre-dental track.

“I’m most excited about beginning my journey on my path to becoming a dentist, meeting new friends, and volunteering to get involved in my dream university,” he said.
