Rachel Grigg says a “typical” day on her internship is really anything but typical.

“Each ‘typical’ day is different, which is the nature of the business,” says the 20-year-old Clinical Leadership and Management major from LaGrange, Ky.

Grigg, who is part of the Class of 2025, landed a summer internship as an administrative intern at Essex Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Louisville.

“I have shadowed the on-site social worker, sat in on corporate meetings, and completed logistics tasks like creating the nursing shift schedule and organizing files,” she said. “(The company) utilizes every learning opportunity possible to give me an immersive experience in the short time I have at Essex.”

Of course, there’s some extra-curricular fun as well.

“My favorite experience so far has been the opportunity to accompany residents on two outings — a fishing trip and a visit to Waterfront Botanical Gardens,” she said. “I have since continued building relationships with residents by participating in events like karaoke and cards, which the wonderful activities team organizes for residents and staff.”

And on the day Tina Turner passed away, Grigg danced with residents to the legendary singer’s music.  

“I love my summer experience thus far and look forward to the coming weeks,” she said. “The varied opportunities for hands-on learning I have been presented with have diversified my professional portfolio. This internship has made me eager to grow my professional skills, as well as sample other fields within clinical management in search of the best environment to showcase my strengths as I continue working toward my degree.” 

Owned and operated by Principle LTC, Essex is one of their many facilities in the state.

After attending the UK Clinical Leadership Internship Fair in January, Grigg contacted John Dailey, VP of employee experience. He then connected her with Ashley Beatty, the regional employee experience consultant and Scott Gibson, the assistant administrator, to begin the interview process. 

Overall, Grigg said it is always important to look for internships in their fields.

“Interning presents students with opportunities to market themselves professionally while building skill sets for both personal and resume growth,” she said. “Gaining work experience in an environment of interest will also aid aspiring professionals in making more informed decisions as they personalize their education to meet their career goals.”
