Communication Sciences and Disorders Undergraduate Course Work
In order to receive a Bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky in Communication Sciences and Disorders, a student must complete courses that fulfill the UK CORE requirements and all required CSD and Related Studies courses. Please see your CHS advisor for details on the timing and sequence of courses to take PRIOR to application to the undergraduate major.

PRE-MAJOR CSD COURSES - Open to All UK Students

  • CSD 120 - Careers in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (1 cr.)


  • PSY 100 - Intro to Psych (4 cr.) or PSY 110 - Intro to Psych (3 cr.) or equivalent by transfer or AP credit
  • CSD 277 - Introduction to Communication Sciences & Disorders (3 cr.)
  • Plus completion of 42 credit hours or more at the time of application to the CSD undergraduate program

BASIC SCIENCE PRINCIPLES - Listed courses are REQUIRED by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association for future professional certification*

  • One 3-credit course in the Biological Sciences
  • One 3-credit course in the Physical Sciences - (Must be a Physics or Chemistry course)           
  • One 3-credit course in Social Sciences - [Satisfied by PSY 100 - Intro to Psych (4 cr.) or PSY 110 - Intro to Psych (3 cr.)]
  • Any 3-credit Statistics course - (STA 210 preferred)

Fall Semester - Junior Year

  • CSD 378 - Anatomy & Physiology of Speech (3 cr.) - (GCCR)
  • CSD 491 - Audiology (3 cr.)               

Spring Semester - Junior Year

  • CSD 402 - Speech Sciences (3 cr.) - (GCCR)
  • CSD 591 - Aural Rehabilitation (3 cr.) - (GCCR)
  • HHS 454 - Research in Human Health Sciences [CSD section] (3 cr.)

Fall Semester - Senior Year

  • CSD 409 - English Grammar for CSD (1 cr.)
  • CSD 571 - Neural Bases of Speech, Language, & Hearing (4 cr.)
  • CSD 485 - Phonetics (3 cr.)
  • CSD 481 - Clinical Experience (3 cr.) - [first 1/2 of cohort] or Non-CSD elective [second 1/2 of cohort]

Spring Semester - Senior Year

  • CSD 410 - Language Development (3 cr.)
  • CSD 482 - Clinical Management (3 cr.)
  • CSD 484 - Diagnostics (3 cr.)
  • CSD 481 - Clinical Experience (3 cr.) - [second 1/2 of cohort] or Non-CSD elective [first 1/2 of cohort]

CSD MAJOR REQUIRED COURSES (through the College of Education) - May be taken at anytime but strongly encouraged to complete prior to Senior Year

  • EDS 375 - Intro to Education of Exceptional Children (3 cr.)
  • EDS 516 - Principles of Behavior Management and Instruction (3 cr.)


  • One 3-credit course in Linguistics (such as: LIN 211, 212, 221, 310, 317, 509) - LIN course may be taken prior to admission
    • LIN 221 is the preferred course for CSD undergraduate majors

*UK CORE Requirements will usually satisfy the ASHA basic sciences standards. Please see the Director of Undergraduate Studies for exact details and specifics of these major requirements.  ASHA Standard IV.A. The student must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of biological sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, and the social/behavioral sciences.  Applicants must have transcript credit (can include course work, advanced placement, CLEP, or examination of equivalency in each of these areas).

PLEASE NOTE: The new CSD undergraduate curriculum listed above applies to all students beginning with the 2019 admitted CSD undergraduate majors class. Students admitted to the CSD major prior to Fall 2019 will follow the old curriculum outlined during their orientation to completion.
