Just over eight years ago, Matt Brown was driving down the road on his riding lawnmower, headed for the local pawn shop, so he could sell more items for drugs.
Brown, a graduate of UK’s Physical Therapy program on the Hazard campus, had been a high-achieving academic his entire life — he was the high school valedictorian who everyone thought was steering down a road of success.

These days, when Andrew Branham gets off work at the East Kentucky Physical Therapy & Sports Clinic, he changes out of his professional clothes and puts on an old T-shirt, shorts and boots. Gloves are a good idea, too. And he reminds himself to bring along the shovels and the cleaning supplies.

Dyeshia Parrott was just 12 when the accident happened.
She was riding in the car with her family when the vehicle hit a patch of black ice and crashed. While others suffered only minor injuries, Dyeshia was left with a severed spinal cord that resulted in her being paralyzed from the waist down.
That was 12 years ago.
